Positional Vertigo

Spinning World? Understanding Left-Ear Positional Vertigo & Holistic Healing

Have you ever experienced that terrifying sensation where the room starts spinning the moment you tilt your head or roll over in bed? If you are dealing with Positional Vertigo (BPPV) specifically in the left ear, you know how much it can disrupt your daily life.

Today, I want to share how we approach this dizzying condition through the lens of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) and Acupuncture.

1. The Root Cause: Why Me? Why Now?

In Western medicine, BPPV occurs when tiny calcium crystals (otoconia) break loose and float into the semicircular canals of the inner ear. However, as an acupuncturist, I look deeper. I ask: “Why did the body allow these crystals to displace in the first place?”

In my practice, we often categorize this under:

  • Phlegm-Dampness (痰飮): Metabolic waste buildup that obstructs the circulation around the inner ear.
  • Qi & Blood Deficiency: When the body is overworked, the vestibular system doesn’t receive enough “fuel” to maintain balance.

2. Dr. Sung’s Integrative Treatment Approach

① Precision Acupuncture I focus on key points around the ear, such as TE17 (Yifeng), TE21 (Ermen), and SI19 (Tinggong), along with distal points like ST36 or LV3. This helps regulate blood flow to the inner ear and calms the nervous system to reduce the intensity of the “spinning.”

② Herbal Medicine: Banxia Baizhu Tianma Tan.g This is my “go-to” formula for vertigo.

  • Pinellia (Banxia): Clears the “phlegm” or internal dampness causing the heaviness.
  • Gastrodia (Tianma): A powerful herb specifically used to “extinguish wind” and stop dizziness.
  • White Atractylodes (Baizhu): Strengthens digestion to prevent future dampness buildup.

③ Cervical Alignment (Chuna Therapy) The nerves serving your ears pass through the neck. Often, tightness in the left side of the neck (the SCM muscle) can exacerbate left-ear vertigo. By gently correcting the cervical spine, we ensure the pathways to your balance centers are clear.

3. Dr. Sung’s Recovery Tips

  • The “Slow Rise”: Never jump out of bed. Sit on the edge for 30 seconds before standing to let your ears calibrate.
  • Hydration & Diet: Avoid inflammatory foods (sugar, excessive caffeine) that can increase fluid pressure in the ear.
  • Vestibular Rehab: Once the acute spinning stops, gentle habituation exercises are vital to retrain your brain.

Final Thoughts: Vertigo is more than just a physical symptom; it’s a signal from your body to restore balance. My goal is not just to stop the spinning, but to strengthen your body so it doesn’t happen again.

If you’re tired of the world spinning out of control, let’s work together to find your center.
